Challenge

Planetariums offer a unique platform for teaching not only astronomy, but a wide range of subjects. They open up immersive learning experiences and allow learners to travel anywhere through space and time. However, for many educators, delivering these experiences comes with significant logistical and financial barriers — traditional planetarium systems are expensive, bulky, and complex to operate.

In 2003, Digitalis transformed the industry by introducing the first truly affordable, portable digital planetarium. Since then, the challenge has been continual: portable systems must be lightweight, compact, and easy to transport and store, without sacrificing image quality or performance. Educators also need intuitive, reliable technology that can be set up quickly with minimal technical expertise.

Finding a projection solution that could balance brightness, image quality, size, and weight — while supporting 4K UHD resolution and compatibility with Digitalis' proprietary fisheye lenses — was critical to delivering on this mission.

Solution

With decades of combined experience in planetarium education and system design, the Digitalis team carefully evaluated projection technologies to meet the unique demands of portable dome environments. In 2026, Digitalis launched two new systems — the Digitarium Mu 2 and the Theta 4 — selecting Optoma projectors that met strict criteria for size, weight, brightness, reliability, and 4K UHD resolution.

By integrating Optoma projectors into its latest systems, Digitalis continues to expand access to immersive astronomy education worldwide.
